Women Encouraged to Keep Trying For Baby For Longer

April 3, 2012 by Caitlin Allen

An Australian study that follows 8000 women over a long period of time has identified that 1 in 4 women who are struggling to conceive will have a baby naturally even if it takes them a little longer. Another 1 in the 4 women had gone on to have IVF. The study concludes that for women under the age of 36, it may be worth trying to conceive naturally for longer.

Usually people who have been trying to conceive for over 12 months (when under 35) and over 6 months (when over 35) are referred for fertility treatment in the UK. This increasingly becomes a route to IVF as this has become the most favoured method of intervention. This study confirms what practitioners in the health field often suspect; that many people who are struggling to conceive , and whom we know are ovulating, just need to try for a little longer to get their much desired pregnancy.

Many women and couples come to see me for a fertility information session, to discuss ways to maximise their fertility. We discuss diet, lifestyle, stress and look at methods that can promote natural fertility. Acupuncture may be part of a plan that someone chooses to support themselves with.

Acupuncture May Alleviate Chronic Pelvic Pain

Scientists from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) have published an “Opinion Paper” where they state that both Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine may be useful in the treatment of chronic pelvic pain.

The experts who published this Opinion Paper admitted that they were not quoting from specific trials on chronic pelvic pain and the use of acupuncture – but were looking at the results of trials on closely related conditions such as dysmenorrhoea (painful menstruation), pelvic inflammatory disease, and irritable bowel syndrome – published in the Cochrane review.

They also quoted results of trials published in the Cochrane review for the use of Chinese Herbal Medicine for similar ‘related’ conditions (e.g. dysmenorrhoea).

Lead author Professor George Lewith said; “Some small trials suggest that acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine may be beneficial for chronic pelvic pain. Many women use acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for chronic pelvic pain so this area clearly requires further rigorous investigation and we would support further well-designed research for this problematic condition.”

More Sperm Friendly Dietary Advice In New Study

A new study has detailed the effects of a diet high in saturated fats on sperm. It has long been thought that saturated fats and a lack of ‘good’ fats or omega 3’s, may have this effect and this study gives further evidence of this and the importance of eating well for healthy sperm. In the fertility support session I offer to couples, I often men and women to take a good quality Omega 3 supplement – usually fish oil of at least 1000mg daily and of a brand that includes a high DHA in the oil.
