Kung Hei Fat Choy!

February 18th sees the start of the Chinese New Year and 2007 heralds the year of the Pig (or Boar).

Those born in 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983 and 1995 are also born under the sign of the pig and are thought to work very hard, have excellent manners, be loyal friends and enjoy luxuries. To have children in this year is considered very lucky as they will be happy and honest.

The Chinese calendar follows the lunar year in which the years are arranged in major cycles of 60 years, and the 12 year cycles (each with a different animal) are repeated.

According to legend, Buddha asked animals to meet him on Chinese New Year. Twelve animals came – the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Sheep, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog, and the Pig. So he named each year after them claiming that a person born under that year would have similar characteristics to the animal.
