AMH (Ovarian Reserve) Testing at Spire In Leeds

2 February, 2010

AMH or Anti-Mullerian Hormone is produced by the ovarian granulosa cells and correlates with ovarian reserve. It is predictive of the number of eggs that a woman has and stays relatively stable throughout her menstrual cycle (only fluctuating 1-2 notches).

The reference ranges for AMH are:

optimal fertility – 28.6-48.5

satisfactory fertility – 15.7-28.6

Low fertility – 2.2-15.7

Very low fertility – 0.0-2.2

Scores of under 5 make IVF less likely to succeed. However, Zita West, fertility expert, points out that “Lots of women with a ‘low’ AMH of 5 or 6 do get pregnant naturally and even with a low AMH score , often the best chance of achieving pregnancy is to conceive naturally if you are able”.  So if you have a low AMH don’t assume you should be rushing to get IVF. I would also like to add that I have treated a number of women with very low AMH scores. One woman had a score of 1 and went on to conceive in her first IVF despite having produced only one embryo that could be used and which was low grade. She is having a healthy pregnancy and is due to give birth in May.

What AMH does not tell you is about the quality of your remaining eggs. To measure quality you can have an Antral Follicle Count, which measures quality of eggs through pelvic ultrasound. Some fertility clinics are starting to offer this AFC in conjunction with AMH. However, this is not currently being offered in Leeds.

Leeds Spire Hospital is now offering AMH testing. To access the blood test you will need a GP referral and a request form which is available from Spire. A blood test will be carried out either at Spire or by your GP, although it is easier for the clinic for you to have it done on site. You should get the results of your AMH a week later from your GP. The cost will be in the region of £60. Contact Spire on 0113 2693939.
